But like so many other cities in the Pacific Northwest, Bainbridge Island has a serious drug and alcohol addiction problem. And also like so many other cities across the country, many residents just don’t know where to go to find the help they need.
This guide to addiction resources in and around Bainbridge Island, WA takes a closer look at some of the best resources in the area. Whether it’s overdose help, local support groups, or professional treatment, we’ll look at a range of options to help keep residents safe, supported, and sober.
Unchecked substance abuse can lead to a slew of problems. It can ravage relationships, sabotage career goals, drain finances, and so much more.
But the ways that it can impact your health are some of the most alarming. And this is especially true in the case of overdoses.
Overdoses can and do cause serious health problems that can end up lasting a lifetime. And in many cases, it can lead to death.
Deaths via overdose are on the rise too. Fatal overdoses in the U.S. numbered over 70 thousand in 2017 alone – up by a whopping 316% since 1999.
It isn’t any wonder why drug overdoses are now the number one killer of Americans under the age of 55.
It’s not just drugs either. Alcohol poisoning has become so rampant that 6 lives are lost every single day to an alcohol overdose in the United States alone.
And all of this spells out the need to know both the signs of an overdose and what you should do to treat it.
Different drugs have different overdose symptoms. And knowing which go with each can make treating an overdose much easier.
Below are the most common overdose symptoms for some of the most widely-abused drugs today.
Benzodiazepines – Most commonly used to treat mood disorders like anxiety or depression, benzos are powerful prescription drugs with a very real legitimate purpose. However, they’re being abused at an increasingly rapid rate. And that abuse can very easily lead to an overdose. An overdose on benzos may include symptoms like:
Cocaine – Cocaine has long been one of the most highly abused illicit drugs out there. And unfortunately, it’s also incredibly dangerous too. The signs of an overdose could include:
Alcohol – Despite its legality and wide availability, alcohol is also a lot more dangerous than most people know. Here are some of the signs of alcohol poisoning to watch out for:
Heroin – One of the most dangerous street drugs available today, heroin is addictive and deadly. Some signs of a heroin overdose usually include:
AIRWAYS AND LUNGS
EYES, EARS, NOSE, AND THROAT
HEART AND BLOOD
SKIN
STOMACH AND INTESTINES
NERVOUS SYSTEM
Crystal Meth – This illicit stimulant is just as potent as it is habit-forming. And that makes it especially easy to overdose on it. Some signs of a meth overdose include:
Prescription Opioids – Most well-known by brand names like OxyContin or Vicodin, prescription opioids have a reasonable place in the doctor’s office. But when they’re abused either by patients or by people who buy them on the street, they can be quite deadly too. Below are some of the most notable signs of an overdose.
The first step in effectively treating an overdose is to get medical help immediately. This is a serious medical condition that is not going to clear up on its own.
So if you do spot the signs of an overdose above, call 9-1-1 immediately.
Once you’re on the line with operators, they’ll likely send an ambulance to your location and ask you a range of questions to better understand what’s going on. These questions may include:
Be sure to answer these questions as accurately and honestly as possible. The better you are at providing information, the more they will be able to ensure the absolute best outcomes.
If you do have to leave the side of the victim and you’re all alone, be sure to place them into the recovery position to reduce the chances of deadly complications.
While you wait for the ambulance to arrive, the operator may ask you to administer CPR or perform other actions like inducing vomiting. Try to follow their instructions as closely as you can.
When the ambulance does arrive, the EMTs on board will be able to take over treating the victim. They may use a variety of medical instruments and even certain medications like naloxone to reverse the overdose.
In the end, the key is to act quickly and to answer the operator’s questions honestly.
Despite what some people may claim, addiction is widely considered to be a disease – not a choice. And it’s a chronic disease at that. That means that many addicts have anywhere from a 40 to 60% chance of relapsing – relapse stats similar to other chronic conditions like hypertension or asthma.
But one of the best things that substance abusers can do after treatment to help reduce this risk is to seek out a source of long-term support. And local support groups are some of the best options for this support.
Meetings are often hosted across the country in nearly every major town and city. And they can connect recovering addicts with an invaluable social support network that can help maintain motivation, provide accountability, and ultimately promote long-term sobriety.
There are quite a few types of local support groups to choose from too. Below are some of the best.
For many, Alcoholics Anonymous has been a beacon of hope in their struggle against alcoholism. These groups are widely available, easy to join, and incredibly helpful in guiding their members towards a more alcohol-free lifestyle.
AA is built on the 12-step model – an approach to recovery that tries to instill honesty, courage, and humility in recovering addicts. And in doing so, it can make adopting and maintaining sobriety far more successful than simply trying to stay clean all on your own.
There are quite a few Alcoholics Anonymous meetings nearby to have a look at too.

Developed in 1953, Narcotics Anonymous sought to apply the 12-step model to addictions other than just alcohol alone. And it’s one of the most successful and widespread offshoots of AA yet.
In fact, it boasts weekly meeting numbers of nearly 67 thousand in 149 different countries across the world.
And like AA, it was founded on the principles of accessibility, anonymity, and healing through sharing.
Meetings may not be as numerous as with AA. But even still, there are quite a few NA meeting happening in and around Bainbridge Island, WA.

Over the course of an addiction, substance abusers often hurt the people closest to them, emotionally, physically, or both. And unfortunately, the victims of that pain often don’t get the focused support that they need to stay happy, healthy, and safe.
Al-Anon is a 12-step group devoted specifically to addressing the pain that friends and family members of alcoholics so often go through. And it's helped countless individuals get the support, guidance, and healing that they so desperately need.
Around Bainbridge Island, there are a number of Al-Anon groups taking place every single week. Below are some of the closest.

As with any type of support group, the healing can only begin when members actually open up about their experiences and take in the experiences of others. But for young people in particular, doing so can be especially tough.
Part of the reason it’s so hard for this age group is because many times they’re surrounded by adults much older than them.
Alateen is a 12-step group devoted to helping young people who have been hurt by another person’s drinking. And one of the key differentiators between this group and others is the fact that members are generally all younger than 20 years old.
This more youth-oriented approach to a support group allows members to feel more comfortable sharing lessons they’ve learned and embracing those of others.
Unfortunately, there aren’t many meetings in the Bainbridge Island area. However, there are 3 in particular nearby.

Like AA, Narcotics Anonymous also has its own offshoot that caters specifically to the needs of friends and family members of substance abusers of all kinds. And it’s called Nar-Anon.

Having an alcoholic for a parent can be tough. It can lead to all sorts of issues, whether they’re physical (illness, abuse, neglect, etc.) or emotional (lack of attention, unnecessary aggression, etc.). But no matter what kind of problem it is, it can lead to lifelong problems that may persist well into adulthood.
For these individuals, there’s Adult Children of Alcoholics or ACoA. This 12-step group is a valuable resource for an often-underserved segment of the population that may not have gotten this kind of support otherwise.
There are a couple of meetings particularly close to Bainbridge Island too.

Not all support groups fall into the 12-step category. And in fact, some of the best sources of support can come from one of the many 12-step alternatives out there.
SMART Recovery is one of such a group. These meetings teach members to take action and feel empowered over their addiction. They offer members science-based techniques and strategies for overcoming cravings and attaining sobriety.
They’re also led by certified instructors rather than members and take a non-spiritual approach to recovery.
There are several nearby SMART Recovery groups worth taking a look at.

For some, in-person support groups just may not be a realistic option. It could be a full schedule holding them back, a lack of transportation, or a sense of shame stemming from the numerous stigmas surrounding addiction.
But no matter the reason, there are plenty of other options for support. And online support groups are some of the most flexible ones available.
These meetings can take place in a variety of formats including real-time chatrooms, email, or even video teleconferencing. Each group is different.
Below are just a few options to get you started.
>Getting the right kind of support during recovery is a vital part of fighting off cravings and staying sober. Support groups can also help give you a relapse prevention network that you can call when times are especially tough.
But even still, the overwhelming majority of addicts are going to need a higher level of care in order to get clean for good. And that’s where professional programs come in.
A professional program is designed to give substance abusers the absolute best chance at sobriety. They usually employ evidence-based treatments and therapies to help get patients through the worst stages of quitting and give them the proven tools they need to stay sober longer.
The majority of professional programs fall into one of two categories: detoxification and rehabilitation.
Detoxification will always come first in a recovery program. That’s because it deals specifically with the first phase of recovery: withdrawal. This is when the body goes through a range of uncomfortable side effects after quitting. These may include:
For many, these side effects can be so troublesome that they end up turning back to using just to get relief from these symptoms. And in most cases, this results in a full-blown relapse and weeks, months, or even years more substance abuse without getting help.
A professional detox program does three things in particular.
Rehabilitation is the next step after detoxification. It deals more with the mental side of addiction. And using treatments like one-on-one counseling, group talk, and behavioral therapies, it gives patients the tools they need to reverse compulsive behaviors that made their addiction worse.
And without rehab, detoxification does little to nothing to support long-term sobriety on its own.
There are three different types of rehab programs too.
Unfortunately, there aren’t any addiction treatment programs on Bainbridge Island itself, though there are a few others nearby. However, basing your decision on which program to enroll in shouldn’t actually be based on proximity alone. And choosing to travel for treatment instead can open up the door to higher quality programs than you might have been looking at before.
But there are also other benefits of travelling for treatment too. Below are some of the most notable.
As you can see, there are plenty of addiction resources in and around Bainbridge Island to take advantage of. Whether it be overdose help, support groups, or professional treatment, there are so many different ways to get the specific help you or your loved one needs.
And when it does come time to choose a professional program, Northpoint Seattle is one of the best facilities in the Seattle Metropolitan Area.
Located just across the Puget Sound in Bellevue, Northpoint Seattle is a modern and comfortable intensive outpatient program that offers flexibility and high-quality care. Plus, we’re proud to be nationally accredited by the Joint Commission too.
But we know that our program isn’t right for everyone. Only a conversation with a qualified addiction professional can help you determine if you’re a good fit.
