The Dangers of Overdosing

Overdose is a serious problem when it comes to any addictive substance. Not only can it lead to lifelong physical and mental problems when it isn’t treated in time, but it can also be potentially fatal too.

To make matters even worse, the rate of deadly overdoses in the U.S. is actually on the rise.

In 1999, about 17,000 people died from a drug overdose. But in 2017, well over 70 thousand Americans lost their lives due to the same cause. That’s higher than death rates associated with guns, auto accidents, and even certain types of cancers.

The problem has gotten so out of control that drug overdose is the number one cause of death within Americans that are under the age of 55.

It seems clear, then, that it’s never been more important than it is today to know how to both recognize an overdose and understand how best to treat one. It’s also important to address substance abuse to someone who has experienced an overdose. They may take part in a drug detox and rehab program to avoid further negative consequences of drug use.

Not all drugs cause the same overdose symptoms. And that can make getting the right kind of treatment especially difficult.

Below are some of the most common signs of an overdose for some of the most widely abused drugs today.

Benzodiazepines – These drugs are typically used to treat mental disorders like depression or anxiety. But when they’re abused or mixed with other drugs, they can very easily lead to a dangerous overdose. Some signs of a benzo overdose include:

  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • Unresponsiveness
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Nystagmus (repetitive, uncontrolled eye movements)
  • Hallucinations
  • Slurred speech
  • Ataxia (lack of muscle coordination)
  • Coma
  • Hypotonia (overly relaxed muscles)
  • Weakness
  • Altered mental status, impairment of thinking
  • Poor memory
  • Shallow breathing
  • Low blood pressure

Cocaine – This party drug is quite popular in the club scene. And like other drugs, it can cause serious and life-threatening problems when taken in excess. Some signs of an overdose on this drug could include:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of awareness of surroundings
  • Loss of urine control
  • High body temperature, severe sweating
  • High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
  • Bluish color of the skin
  • Fast or difficulty breathing
  • Death

Prescription Opioids – Prescription painkillers are used to treat pain in patients. And while they’re incredibly helpful when used properly, they can be both addictive and deadly when abused. Some signs of an overdose on prescription opioids like OxyContin or Vicodin include:

  • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
  • Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Limp body
  • Pale, blue, or cold skin

HeroinAn especially dangerous and addictive illicit drug, the signs of a heroin overdose usually include:

AIRWAYS AND LUNGS

  • No breathing
  • Shallow breathing
  • Slow and difficult breathing

EYES, EARS, NOSE, AND THROAT

  • Dry mouth
  • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
  • Discolored tongue

HEART AND BLOOD

  • Low blood pressure
  • Weak pulse

SKIN

  • Bluish-colored nails and lips

STOMACH AND INTESTINES

  • Constipation
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines

NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • Coma
  • Delirium
  • Disorientation
  • Drowsiness
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements

Crystal Meth – This powerful stimulant is intoxicating and addictive. Many users also go on “meth runs” where they binge on the drug for days at a time – making the problem even worse. Some signs of a meth overdose include:

  • Agitation
  • Chest pain
  • Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
  • Heart attack
  • Irregular or stopped heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Very high body temperature
  • Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
  • Paranoia
  • Seizures
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Stroke

Alcohol – No other drug is quite as culturally ingrained into daily life as alcohol. But it can be especially dangerous too. Here are some of the signs to watch out for:

  • Confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
  • Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths)
  • Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia)
  • Passing out (unconsciousness) and can't be awakened

Okay, you’ve identified an overdose. Now what?

Easy – call 9-1-1 immediately.

An overdose of any kind is a serious emergency. And only qualified professionals can ensure the absolute best outcomes in this type of situation.

Do not try to treat one entirely on your own. Do not hesitate. And do not convince yourself that everything will be okay if you don’t intervene. Either of these mistakes can end up costing the victim their life.

If you do have to leave the side of the victim, be sure to place them into the “recovery position.” This simple yet effective step can help reduce the risk of serious complications, some of which may be life-threatening.

The operator on the other end will likely send an ambulance to your location while trying to get a better understanding of the situation at hand. As a result, they may ask you a range of questions, including:

  • What is the age, sex, height, and weight of the victim?
  • What’s their current condition?
  • What drug caused the overdose and when was it last used?
  • Does the victim have a history of substance abuse?
  • Do they have a prescription for the drug?

Honesty and accuracy are key here. The better information you provide, the better the operator will be able to help save the life of the victim. Do not lie (e.g., telling them that illegal drugs weren’t involved when they really were). Being dishonest about the situation can make it significantly harder to treat the victim appropriately.

They may also ask you to perform CPR or administer other care measures too.

Once the ambulance arrives, the EMTs will take over treatment using special equipment and possibly certain overdose-specific medications (e.g., naloxone). They will also likely transfer the victim to a hospital so they can receive more comprehensive care too.

Local Support Groups Near Renton, Washington

Just like any other serious mental disorder, recovering from an addiction takes an enormous amount of support. Going to professional drug and alcohol rehab should be the first thing you do. You’ll have a lot of support through this period and when you go home, you might think you’ve got addiction beat.

You will need to continue focusing on your recovery or you may slip back into old habits. This is why support groups are so helpful. Sure, willpower is an important factor. But it and it alone often is not enough to prevent eventual relapse.

That’s why finding a local support group is such an important part of any recovery plan. These groups can help give members the motivation and emotional backing to remain clean long after quitting.

And luckily, there are plenty of local support groups around Renton to choose from. Below are some of the best in the area.

Perhaps one of the most well-known support groups in the world, Alcoholics Anonymous was founded all the way back in 1935 by two men in Akron, Ohio. And from its humble roots, its membership has grown to more than 2.1 million across the world in 2017.

AA is so popular in part because of its accessibility. Meetings and membership are entirely free, open to all, and are relatively anonymous (no formal registering with the program). And each of these components goes a long way towards attracting new members who are wary about opening up to support.

Another component of AA that makes it so popular is the 12-step model. These steps were developed as a way of supporting dramatic changes in the lives of members – changes that can make recovering from alcoholism significantly easier.

In the Renton area, there are quite a few AA meetings happening nearby too.

One of the earliest offshoots of AA, Narcotics Anonymous may not be quite as large as its parent group. But unlike Alcoholics Anonymous, NA caters to substance abuse problems of any kind, not just alcoholism.

It uses a similar 12-step approach to recovery that has helped hundreds of thousands of members regain control over their addiction. And like AA, it’s also free, open to all, and completely anonymous.

For many addictions, the substance abuser themselves aren’t the only ones who are regularly hurt by a drug or alcohol problem. Friends, family members, and even coworkers can all experience serious difficulties because of another person’s addiction.

And that’s where Al-Anon comes in. This 12-step program caters specifically to the needs of individuals who have been hurt by another person’s alcoholism. And for many people, it provides the support they need to stay happy, healthy, and supported.

There are plenty of Al-Anon groups around Renton to check out, too.

For many young people affected by another person’s drinking, opening up to support can be tough. This is especially true when the support group is made up of people way outside of a similar age range.

Alateen is a 12-step family support group that tackles this issue in particular. Members are usually 9 to 20 years old (depends on the group). This can make it substantially easier for members to tell their story and help others just like them.

There are three Alateen meetings taking place around Renton

When it comes to growing up in an alcoholic home, the trauma experienced here can actually end up lasting a lifetime. And many times, children who have an alcoholic parent will continue to have serious problems long into adulthood.

Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoA) is a 12-step group that specifically deals with this group of people and provides a source of healing they might not be able to find elsewhere.

The closest ACoA meetings are below.

Not all support groups are built on the 12-step model. And in fact, some recovering substance abusers may find that they would prefer a different approach to recovery altogether.

SMART Recovery is one of the best 12-step alternatives in the area. It focuses on providing members with real, actionable sobriety techniques that have been backed up by hard science. It’s also 100% non-spiritual in nature.

There are quite a few SMART Recovery meetings happening nearby too.

While face-to-face support groups offer the best level of support, there are alternatives to consider.

Online support groups, for example, provide access to invaluable support that is far more flexible. All it takes is a smart device or computer and an internet connection.

Some of these groups use online forums. Others are based on real-time chat forums. And others still meet via video calls with programs like Skype.

No matter the format though, they offer support for people that may not have otherwise been able to find it before.

Below are some of the best online support groups to have a look at.

Professional Addiction Treatment in Renton, WA

It’s true that support is a crucial part of anyone’s recovery. After all, getting the right kind of support can help maintain motivation, enable users to reduce stress in their lives, and connect with others who can provide valuable emotional support. But support alone often is not enough to overcome an addiction. And in fact, the overwhelming majority of users will need the help of a professional program if they hope to get clean for good.

There are about 18 drug and alcohol rehab centers in or around Renton. This allows you to choose what addiction treatment program will work for you. There are both inpatient and outpatient programs. You can either immerse yourself in a residential setting or choose an Intensive Outpatient addiction treatment facility. It depends on whether you need to stay at home or think it’s best to focus solely on your recovery.

At Northpoint Seattle, we have two locations in Bellevue and Seattle where we provide an Intensive Outpatient Program. You may find this is exactly what you need as you can stay home and still go through high quality treatment. Our programs will involve an assessment so we can determine how to help you best. This tailoring of your program means you’re getting the right therapy, which increases the chance of a successful recovery. This is something that is also practiced in any inpatient rehab program.

This is what you can expect while taking part in our outpatient program:

  • We’re going to connect you with other people in your community so you have support even when you’re not going through treatments at the facility.
  • You get structure in your life that makes managing addiction easier.
  • We make you accountable for your actions, which has shown to be highly motivating in addiction treatment.
  • We give you essential information such as the skills and tools to deal with common addiction recovery challenges. An example of this would be dealing with triggers and changing behaviors.
  • One on one mentoring.
  • A tailored experience so you get the right kind of help for your addiction.

You might feel like you need more support and you’re worried about relapse. If you have the time to take off work and can afford to do so, there are inpatient programs. Our Northpoint Inpatient Rehab facility is in Edmonds. You will stay in a residential setting for a few weeks, getting high quality intensive treatments. As you’re on a campus, there’s no chance of relapse during the most vulnerable time of addiction treatment. You’ll have constant support and move through a full spectrum recovery plan. It is usually advised to enter into inpatient rehab first and then move onto an outpatient program if you feel you need more support.

A professional program offers a more comprehensive recovery process. These programs use evidence-based treatments and proven strategies that have been scientifically shown to help support long-term sobriety.

And with their help, anyone can ensure that they’re getting the best possible shot at lifelong sobriety.

There are two main phases of a complete treatment program: detoxification and rehabilitation.

Detoxification – The first phase of a recovery plan, detox helps recovering addicts overcome the incredibly troublesome physical and mental withdrawals. These withdrawals can often be so uncomfortable that substance abusers will turn back to using just to get relief from them.

A professional program helps keep patients from relapsing during withdrawals and also treats the numerous symptoms experienced throughout. This can make the withdrawal process far more manageable, less uncomfortable, and even shorter in some cases.

These programs also make sure to prevent and treat any serious complications should they arise. And given that some of these complications can be deadly, going through withdrawal without professional support is never a good idea.

Rehabilitation – This is the second phase of treatment, and it comes after detoxification. It deals more with the mental side of addiction rather than the physical as with detox. Compulsive and self-destructive behaviors, poor stress management techniques, and underlying mental disorders (co-occurring disorders) are just a few of the focuses of these programs.

There are three major types of rehab programs: inpatient, outpatient, and intensive outpatient programs (IOPs).

  • Inpatient – Typically 30-day programs, inpatient rehab requires patients to eat, sleep, and receive treatment all in the same centralized location. This allows for a more controlled environment as well as a higher level of care. The downfall, however, is that these programs can be quite disruptive to normal life. And working or attending school may be next to impossible during these programs.
  • Outpatient – An outpatient program is quite a bit more flexible. Usually lasting around 3 months, these programs use evening treatment sessions that patients can attend, say, after work. However, the tradeoff is a lower level of care and consequently, may make relapse more likely for some.
  • IOPs – An IOP balances the level of care with flexibility. Similar to an outpatient program in that it usually uses evening sessions, IOP treatment usually lasts for longer each session and occurs more frequently throughout the week. They are also typically around 3 months long.

While there are several addiction treatment programs within Renton itself, the truth is that making the choice to travel for treatment can actually end up being one of the best decisions you can make.

That’s because finding a facility that meets your specific needs is far more important than just how close it is. The better a facility can cater to your particular situation, the more likely you’ll be able to overcome your addiction and stay sober for the long run.

But deciding to travel for treatment can also help in a number of other ways too.

  1. It can open up the door to higher quality treatments and more extensive amenities
  2. It can connect you with addiction medications that other facilities just may not be able to offer.
  3. It can help solidify your commitment to recovery.
  4. It can offer time for reflection.
  5. It can make it harder to quit a program on a whim.
  6. It can offer better privacy and confidentiality since you probably won’t run into anyone you know.

How Much Does Drug and Alcohol Rehab Cost?

Drug and alcohol addiction treatment will vary in price. How much it is will depend on a few things. With high quality treatment in a residential setting, it will cost you the most. Some may even opt for luxury rehab. For those of you just looking to get good, quality addiction treatment, you could expect to pay about $5,000 for alcohol or drug detox and up to an additional $20,000 for inpatient rehab.

The good news is that there are ways to cut costs and still get the addiction treatment you want.

Outpatient programs cost a lot less and may even be free for you if you’re eligible. These programs don’t offer the high quality therapy you may need. If this is the case, you should consider an Intensive Outpatient Program. These programs are going to cost you less, they’re more likely to be covered by your insurance, and you still get quality addiction treatment.

Don’t let these costs alarm you. Most people can’t afford drug and alcohol treatment out of pocket. This is why you have insurance so make sure to take advantage of this. If you don’t have any health insurance, apply at HealthCare.gov. There are various kinds of insurance policies and you can choose one based on what you can afford.
