Addiction Recovery Resources in Seattle, WA to Help You Kick the Habit for Good

Drug and alcohol addiction recovery resources are readily available for anyone in Seattle, Washington. Some people prefer to attend treatment in person, whereas others prefer online options for rehab. Either way, we want people to know that help is available for them when they are ready to take the first step and work on recovering.

The Need for Addiction Treatment in Seattle, WA

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health indicates that close to 10% of people who need addiction treatment never get it. Their reason? They simply did not know where to go, or who to turn to for help.

There are other barriers to treatment as well. More than 37% of people do not move forward with treatment because they do not have health insurance or cannot afford treatment. 8% of people lack transportation to get to rehab or their schedule conflicts with their appointment times.

In 2017, 379 King County residents died because of drug and alcohol abuse. That number was an increase from 2016, when there were 348 deaths. Drugs like opioids, methamphetamine and of course, alcohol, are highly abused in this part of Washington State. So many people need treatment, and we want to help them learn where to get it.

Alcohol and Drug Rehab In Seattle, Washington

When you’re ready to live a life of sobriety, it’s going to take hard work, focus, and help. Going into addiction treatment will increase your chances of success. Drug and alcohol detox and rehab offers you support throughout the process. You’ll have to decide what kind of program will work best for your lifestyle. A highly structured program has been found to be the most effective. There are inpatient and outpatient programs you can choose from.

Drug Use

There are close to 20 different addiction treatment programs available in Seattle. This includes both inpatient and outpatient options. Before making a decision, consider what your personal preference is on addiction treatment. Do you think you can avoid triggers in day to day life while going through the beginning stages of addiction recovery? How much money and time you are able to give to recovery is also something to think about.

We have two locations near Seattle. Northpoint Seattle has outpatient treatment facilities in both Northgate and Bellevue. Our programs offer high quality treatments that are similar to what you’ll experience at an inpatient program. Our alcohol and drug rehab programs will address your addiction and help you understand the underlying causes.

Intensive outpatient programs allow you to stay at home while you’re getting treatment. You’ll attend a facility daily and get essential therapy that’s been proven effective in addiction treatment. You can still go to work and tend to your obligations.

If you have decided to go into a residential alcohol or drug rehab program, Northpoint has a location in Bellevue, Seattle. Our inpatient programs last for a few weeks and often begin with detox with an integration into rehabilitation.

While it may be a fairly new development, it is possible for people to attend drug and alcohol rehab online. Today’s technological advances have allowed people to get the treatment they need right from the comfort of their own homes.

Going to rehab online means having virtual meetings with a therapist and possibly even attending group therapy meetings as well. This is a convenient way for people to recover, and it has meant that many more people get the services they need.

Drug and Alcohol Detox in Seattle

Detox is the process of ridding the body of the substance you’ve become dependent on. No matter what substance it is, there are usually withdrawal symptoms. Flu-like symptoms are common and it may be hard to sleep. In the case of a heavy drinker, there may be a greater concern with withdrawal symptoms.

Alcohol Rehab in Bellevue

There are drug detox programs that allow you to safely and comfortably get through this phase of addiction recovery. The process usually takes about seven days, during which time, you’ll be monitored and cared for. If necessary, you may be put on medical detox. Otherwise, there are holistic measures to help you through.

Drug detoxification is the process through which the body rids itself of the drug it’s addicted to. Drug detox programs in Spokane and elsewhere focus on doing this in a safe and controlled way to avoid the unpleasant and often dangerous symptoms of withdrawal.

Until your body has detoxed from drugs, your chances of recovery aren’t likely. Before entering an alcohol rehab or drug treatment program, you should have the substance out of your system completely. you’ll likely be unable to recover It will be too challenging to focus on the psychological reasons for your addiction when you’re still physically fighting withdrawal symptoms. Your body will continue to crave the drug, and you can experience many health problems related to withdrawal.

Often, people wonder if it’s possible to detox from drugs at home or on your own.

Sometimes people seek out what they believe is the “easy” way out of addiction. This leads them to try one day detox programs or even at home detoxification programs. If you do an online search you can find lots of information about topics like home remedies for opiate withdrawal. Drug detox kits and cleanses sound like they might be the answer to your problems.

However, you need to know that they carry risks. They’re also not usually effective at all.

As of right now, the FDA has not approved a single product for at-home detox purposes. These products may make grand promises, but none of them hold up. Even if they’re available at the pharmacy, you’re better off sticking with professional withdrawal treatments. These have been approved and proven to be effective, both in the short and in the long-term.

Your safest option - and that most likely to lead to a successful recovery - is a professional detox program.

Symptoms of drug withdrawal can include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Getting extremely sweaty
  • Feeling nervous or anxious
  • Developing the shakes or tremors
  • Having severe stomach pain or cramps
  • Feeling depressed
  • Having extreme cravings
  • Becoming angry or easily irritated

How Much is Drug and Alcohol Rehab in Seattle?

Addiction treatment can range in price based on the amenities, what type of program it is, and what quality of service they provide. There is also the matter of insurance, which may cover some or all of your costs. If you have no insurance and wanted to do inpatient rehab, it could cost you up to $20,000. You’ll pay less for outpatient programs however and you won’t have to factor loss of wages into your recovery costs.

We at Northpoint Seattle have quite a few insurance companies we work with so you have the option to get high quality treatment for less:

  • Harvard Pilgrim
  • United Healthcare
  • Humana
  • Aetna
  • Multiplan
  • Optum
  • Amerihealth
  • Cigna
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield
  • Tufts Health Plan
  • Oxford Health Plans

If your company isn’t part of this list, verify your insurance with us.

Anyone who does not have health insurance should visit HealthCare.gov to get more information about policies in their state. This website is filled with great information, and it can walk people through what they need to do to get insurance as soon as possible.

But there are some people who cannot afford health insurance. That can make it hard for them to get the addiction treatment services they need. There are other ways for them to cover the costs associated with rehab, such as:

  • They may want to consider starting an online crowdfunding campaign to help them raise the money.
  • They may want to charge the cost of treatment to a credit card.
  • They may want to take out a personal loan to help cover the costs.
  • They can borrow the money from a relative.
  • They can talk with someone at their local community center to get information about possible scholarships.

Also, SAMHSA provides grant money each year for those who are interested in going to rehab but cannot afford it. Please note that at Northpoint Seattle, we also accept Cobra for anyone who has been laid off or furloughed.

Seattle & King County Needle Exchange Program

Legal Resources for Addiction

You may be looking for addiction treatment, and not support group meetings. That might be the right course of action for you at this time. If it is, you should know that you have a lot of addiction treatment options available to you. You just need to know what those options are.

Unfortunately, substance abuse is inextricably connected with crime. Whether it's losing your sense of judgement from a night of too much drinking or simply using an illicit substance at all, addiction can quite easily lead you into handcuffs in the blink of an eye.

However, for offenders with drug related crimes, King County offers two special courts that can help reduce your sentencing in exchange for your commitment to seek treatment and adhere to the rules of the program.

Juveniles

For juveniles convicted of a drug-related crime, the Juvenile Drug Court program involves treatment, frequent testing, and numerous court hearings before a judge, sometimes as often as once a week. Upon completion of the program, the charges are ultimately dismissed. Eligibility and referral to the program can be determined by the individual's probation counselor or attorney.

Adults

For adults convicted of a drug-related crime, the King County Adult Drug Diversion Court (KCDDC) program provides similar benefits. Upon graduating from the intensive and lengthy (minimum 12 months) program, charges against the individual may be dismissed entirely.

Counseling Help for Addiction

Getting to the root of your addiction is absolutely essential when it comes to full recovery. In addition to the counseling services through the Northpoint Seattle Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), there are a number of other professional counselors in the Seattle area that specialize in addiction in particular.

AA Meetings in Seattle

The most easily recognizable 12-step program today, Alcoholics Anonymous has a long and proven history of helping addicts overcome their cravings, develop healthy coping strategies, and find ways to deal with their addiction without having to turn back to the bottle.

Alcoholics Anonymous

There are no dues, no fees, and no requirements at all other than a desire to stop drinking for good. Men and women are both welcome to join and, just like addiction, AA doesn't discriminate based on religion, gender, age, economic background, or any other factor of identity.

If you or someone you know is struggling with an alcohol addiction, there are an enormous number of daily AA meetings (sometimes hundreds) happening all across Seattle at almost any time of day.

You can find one near you using the Greater Seattle Intergroup Alcoholics Anonymous meeting directory. This search function also allows you to filter the results by specialty (Men only, Women only, Gay/lesbian supported meeting, Young peoples meeting), environmental factors like concurrent Al-Anon or Alateen meetings and childcare, or by accessibility options.

Narcotics Anonymous

Seattle NA Meetings

Narcotics Anonymous in many people's minds is simply the illicit substance arm of Alcoholics Anonymous. However, the truth is that the Narcotics Anonymous approach makes no distinction between drugs and alcohol. Rather, it simply widens the scope to include other substances such as illegal stimulants, opioids, and other harmful compounds.

As a result of this expanded scope, NA meetings allow its members to concentrate on the disease of addiction in general instead of the effects of one substance use disorder in particular. Beyond that, NA's message is also "broad enough to attract addicts form any social class or nationality," so you can be sure you'll fit in.

This 12-step program also follows many of the same core beliefs of AA including a focus on the healing abilities of a higher power, the benefits of a group atmosphere with peers in similar situations, and the necessity of living a healthy, sober life.

Like Alcoholics Anonymous, Seattle is home to numerous NA meetings each and every day in nearly any part of the city. If you or someone you know is struggling from an addiction of any kind, have a look at their extensive list of daily meetings.

Many are completely open to the public but there are also options available only for addicts, just men or women, and some even offer childcare. The range of meeting times is also quite extensive, stretching from 9:30 AM to 10:00 PM in multiple locations.

You can also contact the Seattle chapter of Narcotics anonymous at:

  • Phone: (855) 464-7477 or (206) 790-8888
  • Mailing Address: P.O Box 70404 Seattle, WA 98127

Narcotics Anonymous of the Seattle Area has several NA meetings that people can attend online. There are several different options that should make it easy to fit one into anyone’s schedule.

In addition, the Narcotics Anonymous website has a long list of online NA meetings for people to choose from. With so many options, it should be simple to find the best one.

The Greater Seattle Intergroup has several online options for AA meetings in the Seattle area. These meetings are taking place every day of the week at various times. They can be a great alternative for those who need a way to attend AA virtually.

The Online Intergroup of Alcoholics Anonymous also has several options for AA meetings online. Many of their meetings use either Skype or Zoom.

Alateen & Al-Anon Meetings in Seattle

Gleaning most of its values and lessons from other powerful 12-step programs like AA and NA, Al-Anon is a group that focuses on the pain and difficulties that addiction can have on the family as a unit rather than the addicted individual themselves.

Al-anon and alateen

Similar to other anonymous recovery meetings, Al-Anon allows family members worried about their loved ones' drinking problems to come together, support one another, and share their lessons, insights, and advice with those in a similar situation. These meetings also serve as educational sessions whereby members can learn how to cope with their unique problems and get their loved ones the help they need.

Alateen, a part of the Al-Anon Family groups, is geared specifically towards teenagers with an alcoholic family member. Given the significant life changes happening during this age range, members of Alateen are usually experiencing a number of specific problems that require extra attention.

The Greater Seattle Al-Anon/Alateen organization provides a variety of benefits including literature, services, volunteer opportunities, professional resources, and public events.

They also host an enormous number of meetings all over the Greater Seattle area every single day of the week. If you are interested in learning more about how to cope with the unique problems of family members of an alcoholic, what to do to help them, and where to go if you feel you are in danger, head to the Greater Seattle Al-Anon/Alateen website for more information.

You can also contact their organization at:

Another type of 12-step program, the Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACA) group, focuses specifically on coping with past trauma that occurred as a result of growing up in an alcoholic or otherwise dysfunctional home.

Seattle Adult Children of Alcoholics

Individuals who were raised in these types of homes typically display a variety of identifiable characteristics that point to this past trauma. Some of these traits according to the organization may include:

  • Isolation and fear of authority
  • Approval seeking
  • Easily frightened by criticism and anger
  • A victim mentality
  • Guilt and shame for standing up for oneself
  • Low self-esteem
  • Confuse love and pity

As adult children of alcoholics are not necessarily alcoholics themselves, a different kind of counseling and therapy is required to help them recover from the scars left over from their earlier years. Adult Children of Alcoholics meetings give such individuals the skills, support, and community they need to effectively cope with their past trauma and find more joy in their current life.

If you or someone you know is struggling with their past experiences growing up in an alcoholic home, there are a number of Seattle ACA meetings that take place on a weekly basis.

If overdoses do occur, Seattle is ready for them. According to SAMHSA, the staff at the DESC are on the frontlines dealing with the drug epidemic in Seattle. The staff members are trained to know what to do in the event of an overdose. They keep Naloxone on hand for such an occasion. This buys them time to contact medical professionals and get the person the help they need.

Types of Addiction Rehab Treatment in Seattle

Types of Addiction Rehab Treatment in Seattle

It may be that you need professional addiction treatment before you can consider an outpatient support group. Many people find themselves in this situation. If you need to go to drug or alcohol rehab, you should know what options are available to you.

  • Inpatient Treatment - Inpatient treatment is among the most popular forms of rehabilitation for both drugs and alcohol. This involves remaining in a facility for about 30 days while you get treatment. During that time, you'll go through the detox process, if it is recommended for you. You'll receive counseling and participate in different types of therapy.
  • Outpatient Treatment - Most people find that outpatient facilities aren't appropriate for them when they're first starting out. They need a higher level of care. However, this might work for people who have been through inpatient rehab before. It could also work well for people with new or mild addictions.
  • Intensive Outpatient Treatment - For those who need outpatient care, an IOP program is usually a much better option. This involves several appointments throughout the week. Patients have more time with staff members and tend to do really well. This is best suited for those with supportive families at home. These programs usually run for about 12 weeks.
  • Residential or Long-Term Rehab - People with histories of relapsing, or with severe addictions may need long-term rehab. These residential facilities allow patients to stay much longer than inpatient rehabs. They can receive detox services while they're there, in most cases.
  • Sober Living - Sober living homes are primarily residences. The residents are required to get their own outpatient treatment as a part of their residency. These programs are wonderful for people who need a fresh start in their lives.

How to Choose the Right Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facility in the Seattle Area

If you're new to going to rehab, you may not be sure what you should look for in a facility. A few of the more important characteristics include:

  • Joint Commission Accreditation to ensure that you're getting the best possible care.
  • A smaller patient population with a higher number of staff members. This ensures that you get as much time with staff as possible.
  • The availability of detox services. If they don't offer them, they should provide you with a referral for them.
  • A higher than average success rate. This will give you an indication of what you can expect.
  • A willingness to answer your questions. Any drug and alcohol rehab should expect that new people are going to have questions. They should be more than willing to answer them and provide you with information.
