The Dangers of Overdosing

Substance abuse comes with many serious problems. But without a doubt one of the most dangerous is an overdose.

Overdoses have become increasingly common and especially deadly in recent years. For example, in 1999 the number of people in the U.S. that died from a drug overdose was around 17 thousand. In 2017, that number rose to over 70 thousand.

In fact, drug overdoses are now the number one killers of Americans under the age of 55.

Now more than ever, it’s so important to know how to spot the signs of an overdose as well as what to do to help.

Not all drugs have the same overdose symptoms. Below are some of the most common for the most widely-abused drugs today.

Benzodiazepines – These drugs are usually prescribed to treat depression and anxiety. But when they’re abused either alone or with other drugs, they can easily lead to a life-threatening overdose. An overdose on benzos may include symptoms like:

  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • Unresponsiveness
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Nystagmus (repetitive, uncontrolled eye movements)
  • Hallucinations
  • Slurred speech
  • Ataxia (lack of muscle coordination)
  • Coma
  • Hypotonia (overly relaxed muscles)
  • Weakness
  • Altered mental status, impairment of thinking
  • Poor memory
  • Shallow breathing
  • Low blood pressure

Cocaine – This illicit drug is one of the most popular today, just as it has been for decades. It’s also quite dangerous when abused. The signs of an overdose could include:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of awareness of surroundings
  • Loss of urine control
  • High body temperature, severe sweating
  • High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
  • Bluish color of the skin
  • Fast or difficulty breathing
  • Death

Alcohol – It’s legal. It’s culturally embedded. And it’s also more harmful than most people may be aware of. Here are some of the signs of alcohol poisoning to watch out for:

  • Confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
  • Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths)
  • Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia)
  • Passing out (unconsciousness) and can't be awakened

HeroinThis illicit drug is perhaps the most well-known today. And given its addictive potential and its harmfulness, it’s easy to see why. Some signs of a heroin overdose usually include:

AIRWAYS AND LUNGS

  • No breathing
  • Shallow breathing
  • Slow and difficult breathing

EYES, EARS, NOSE, AND THROAT

  • Dry mouth
  • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
  • Discolored tongue

HEART AND BLOOD

  • Low blood pressure
  • Weak pulse

SKIN

  • Bluish-colored nails and lips

STOMACH AND INTESTINES

  • Constipation
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines

NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • Coma
  • Delirium
  • Disorientation
  • Drowsiness
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements

Crystal Meth – A powerful stimulant, crystal meth is just as addictive as it is potent. Some signs of a meth overdose include:

  • Agitation
  • Chest pain
  • Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
  • Heart attack
  • Irregular or stopped heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Very high body temperature
  • Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
  • Paranoia
  • Seizures
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Stroke

Prescription Opioids – These drugs are some of the main drivers of the current opioid epidemic. And while they can be helpful in treating pain, they’re also highly addictive and incredibly potent. Below are some of the most notable signs of an overdose.

  • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
  • Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Limp body
  • Pale, blue, or cold skin

Step one in treating an overdose is contacting emergency services. This is a serious medical problem. And only an expert can know how best to treat a victim of this deadly condition.

If you notice the signs of an overdose, then, call 9-1-1 immediately.

If you do have to leave the side of the victim though (even if it is just for a minute), be sure to put them into the recovery position. This simple step only takes a second and can be the biggest factor in preventing serious complications like vomiting and choking.

The operator will likely send an ambulance to your location as well as ask for more information about the situation. Some questions they may ask could include:

  • What is the age, sex, height, and weight of the victim?
  • What’s their current condition?
  • What drug caused the overdose and when was it last used?
  • Does the victim have a history of substance abuse?
  • Do they have a prescription for the drug?

Honesty and accuracy are key here. And only the right information will be able to help them better treat the victim.

They may also ask you to perform CPR or administer other life-saving measures.

Once the EMTs arrive, they’ll be able to take over treating the victim. They’ll use special medical devices as well as certain drugs like naloxone to help treat and reverse the symptoms of the overdose. They’ll also likely transport the victim over to a hospital for more complete care.

Local Support Groups Near Mount Vernon, Washington

It takes a lot of hard work to kick an addiction for good. Many times, recovering addicts will go through overwhelming cravings, powerful triggers, and a near-constant desire to go back to using in some cases. And that can make it tough to stay sober without the right kind of motivation.

Local support groups are a great way to find that motivation. By connecting with others in a similar situation, members can learn more about their own experience and build up a social support network that can be invaluable in preventing relapse.

And thankfully, there are quite a few local support groups in the Mount Vernon, Washington area.

Perhaps the most popular support group, Alcoholics Anonymous is widely-known, incredibly accessible, and scientifically proven to support recovery.

It isn’t any wonder, then, that its membership was estimated to be as high as 2.1 million in 2017.

And around Mount Vernon, there plenty of AA meetings to consider looking into.

The 12-step model in AA was so helpful to many that separate groups using the same approach quickly broke off to address other kinds of addiction issues. Narcotics Anonymous was one of the first of these groups.

Unlike Alcoholics Anonymous though, NA was formed to address substance addictions of all kinds, not just alcoholism. And that meant that people struggling with problems involving heroin, cocaine, speed, or even alcohol were all welcome to attend.

NA meetings may not be quite as numerous as AA, but there are still a few groups taking place nearby.

For friends and family members of alcoholics, the struggle around substance abuse is very personal. And many of these individuals have their own unique set of problems that can be quite problematic without the right kind of support.

Al-Anon is a 12-step support group for these people in particular. And it offers friends and family members the opportunity to heal that they may not have gotten otherwise.

Thankfully, Mount Vernon is home to quite a few Al-Anon meetings too. Below are some of the closest.

Not everyone feels comfortable sharing their personal experiences with a group of strangers. And this is especially true when the person is young and surrounded by people more than twice their age.

Alateen is an Al-Anon offshoot devoted specifically to helping young people open up and get the support they need. Members typically fall into a specific age range that’s unique to each group. And it can be incredibly helpful for people in these formative years.

There are three Alateen meetings in particular nearby.

Like friends and family members of alcoholics, the people surrounding a drug user can also often experience serious problems stemming from a lack of support and guidance. And Nar-Anon was created specifically to meet this need.

Like Al-Anon, meetings are built on the 12-step model. And also like Al-Anon, some of the topics of discussion that might be covered include:

The trauma of growing up in a home run tainted by alcoholism can lead to serious problems. And for many individuals from this kind of background, these problems can and often do continue years or even decades after reaching adulthood.

Thankfully, there’s another 12-step group devoted specifically to these cases. And it’s called Adult Children of Alcoholics or ACoA.

ACoA has helped many people with a traumatizing past move forward and build new, healthier life skills they can start using today. And it’s a vital source of support that everyone should be aware of.

ACoA meetings aren’t as easy to find as other 12-step programs. But even still, there are quite a few to check out.

The 12-step model isn’t right for absolutely everyone. And for some, the inherent “spirituality” or even just the steps themselves might not mesh well with their current system of belief.

However, there are quite a few alternatives to be aware of. And SMART Recovery is one of the best ones around. This group is built on evidence-based strategies and techniques for overcoming cravings and supporting long-term recovery.

Not everyone will be able to attend face-to-face meetings like those above. Maybe their schedule will be too full, they may have no means of transportation, or they could simply be bogged down by the stigmas surrounding addiction.

Whatever the reason, there are other ways to get the support that’s so essential. And online support groups are some of the best around.

These groups take place over email, in real-time chat rooms, or even via video conferencing calls. It depends on the group.

Below are some great places to get started.

Professional Treatment for The Best Recovery Outcomes

While support is crucial for long-term recovery, the truth is that it alone won’t often be enough to help an addict kick their problem to the curb for good. And many times, the initial stages of recovery are often the hardest to overcome.

That’s where a professional treatment program comes in. These programs specialize in getting recovering addicts through the most trying stages of sobriety. They use evidence-based strategies, techniques, and therapies to give patients the tools they need to effectively deal with cravings and adopt new, healthier lifestyles.

A professional program is usually classified as either a detoxification program or a rehabilitation program. Some programs may contain both, too.

Detoxification is the initial stage of treatment. And it deals primarily with treating the grueling symptoms of withdrawal once a drug is stopped. These symptoms can be hard to get through without support and may include:

  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Tremors
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Irritability
  • Paranoia
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

A professional detoxification process helps keep patients from giving into these withdrawals and resorting back to using. But on top of that, they also protect recovering addicts from the dangerous and even deadly complications that may pop up during the withdrawal process.

In the end, a professional program is key to making detoxification as easy and as safe as possible.

Rehabilitation comes after detoxification and is all about addressing the more mental side of addiction. Treatments like one-on-one counseling, group talk, and behavioral therapies help reverse the compulsive habits of substance abusers and teach them how to live a healthier and happier life.

And without rehab, detoxification does little to nothing to support long-term sobriety on its own.

There are three different types of rehab programs too.

  • InpatientThis type of program is usually around 30 days and requires patients to stay in a centralized location throughout treatment. This allows for a more controlled environment and a more intensive level of care. However, these programs can make it difficult if not impossible to attend work or school at the same time.
  • Outpatient – An outpatient program offers a more flexible approach to recovery and usually lasts around 3 months. Treatment sessions usually occur several times a week in the evenings, giving patients the freedom to spend their days and nights as they wish. But since it’s a lower level of care, the risk of relapse is often higher in some cases too.
  • Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) – These types of outpatient programs offer a higher level of care without sacrificing flexibility. Treatment sessions usually take place more frequently throughout the week and tend to last a bit longer too.

There are in fact a few professional treatment programs nearby to choose from. However, just because there are programs in town doesn’t mean that they’re the best option. In fact, the key to a successful recovery is finding the facility that’s right for you, not just the one that’s closest.

And actually, deciding to travel for treatment can actually end up being one of the best choices you can make for your recovery. That’s because doing so opens up the door to so many different types of treatment programs – some of which can offer higher-quality services and more individualized care.

But there are also other benefits of travelling for treatment too. Below are some of the most notable.

  • It can make quitting a program on a whim more difficult
  • It can offer time for reflection
  • It can provide a new environment without all the old triggers of home
  • It can reduce the chances of running into someone you know
  • It can help solidify your commitment to recovery
