Below, we describe some of these addiction recovery resources in Pasco, including:
The road to a successful recovery from drug addiction or alcoholism almost always begins with a professional detox program, followed by rehab.
Detox is the process of removing all traces of the addictive substance from the addict’s body. The process allows their bodies to re-learn how to function without the substance. This is necessary in cases where the body has become physically dependent on the substance. The process usually controls the uncomfortable and dangerous withdrawal symptoms caused by taking away or decreasing the substance. Without completing detox, a relapse is likely and can also be dangerous.
Detox is important, but only addresses the physical side of addiction. The other half of addiction is psychological. This is usually addressed after detox, in a rehab program or facility.
There are two main types of rehab: inpatient treatment and outpatient treatment. Addiction is different for each person, so recovery should be too. The different types of treatment will have varying levels of success for different individuals. What’s right for one person isn’t right for everyone.
Inpatient rehab is exactly what most people picture when they hear the word rehab. Patients live within the facility where they’re receiving treatment while taking part in inpatient rehab. They eat, sleep, attend therapy, and take part in other activities all in the same place. Patients are supervised and supported at all times by trained medical professionals. They usually do not have much contact with anyone they know outside of the facility.
During this time in rehab, the patient will probably undergo multiple different kinds of therapy. These could include group or individual sessions. Additionally, patients have a full schedule to learn different ways of filling their time and overcoming cravings. Quality rehab centers will also help patients improve their physical health with consistent hydration, good nutrition, and exercise.
Inpatient treatment is proven to be the most effective addiction treatment method. This means that of all patients who complete an addiction treatment program, those who have completed an inpatient rehab program are the least likely to fall prey to a relapse.
While it’s good to note that inpatient treatment is often most effective, it’s equally good to note that everyone is different. Some routes of treatment will work for some, but not for others.
Outpatient treatment is similar to inpatient treatment in many ways. The main difference between the two is that the patient lives independently, or away from the facility, during outpatient treatment. They only go to the treatment facility itself for specific, scheduled events.
Outpatient rehab tends to be cheaper than inpatient treatment because the patient is only paying for the cost of the treatment, not also living costs. However, it doesn’t provide the supervision or encouragement that often make inpatient treatment so successful. This could potentially leave patients more susceptible to a relapse.
Outpatient rehab can be ideal for those with lasting commitments such as full-time jobs or school. It can also be a good choice for those who are at a lower risk for a relapse. This is especially true if the patient has a strong support system and hasn’t been using heavily or for long.
Unfortunately, addiction recovery is never truly over. Recovering addicts must commit to recovery one day at a time. Many former addicts find long-term support in the form of support groups or 12 step programs. These groups bring recovering drug addicts or alcoholics together to hold each other accountable, even in the later stages of recovery. Those who attend these meetings learn coping mechanisms to combat cravings, how to make amends for past behavior that may have harmed those around them, and the ability to seek help from others.

Another unfortunate truth of addiction and alcoholism is that the users aren’t the only ones harmed by their substance abuse. Almost always, their friends’ and families’ lives are just as disrupted and derailed.
Because of this, there are also support groups available for the loved ones of recovering and current drug addicts and alcoholics. These groups allow these friends, parents, children, spouses, and other loved ones to come together and find strength in shared experiences and learn more about what those they love have experienced or are still experiencing. They may also learn to cope in healthy ways and prevent themselves from enabling these addicted friends and family members.
The most prominent of these groups are Al Anon, Nar Anon, and Alateen.
Alateen caters specifically to older children and teens who are close to alcoholics. The group works much like the ones for adults. However, there is an added emphasis on breaking generational cycles of addiction. It’s important to break these cycles so the next generation doesn’t give in to the same disease to which their older loved ones have fallen prey.
