Wenatchee, Washington Addiction Rehab Resources

Sometimes referred to as the "Apple Capital of the World," Wenatchee is a north-central Washington community that offers plenty of nearby activities for avid outdoor enthusiasts.

But despite the gorgeous landscapes, Wenatchee residents struggle with the same ugly problem affecting so many other cities across the country – addiction.

This problem is made even direr by the fact that many people just don't know where to turn to get help. In fact, one national survey found that nearly 11% of addicts looking for support end up not getting it simply because they don’t know where to find it.

And that can lead to thousands and even millions of Americans not getting the help they so desperately need.

This complete guide to addiction resources in Wenatchee, Washington aims to solve that problem for this Washington community. It covers overdose help, local support groups, and professional treatment options.

And it can be a vital part of keeping Wenatchee residents safe, supported, and sober.

The Dangers of Overdosing

One of the most dangerous aspects of a substance abuse problem is the risk of experiencing an overdose. Not only can they lead to permanent physical and mental damage, but they can also be (and often are) life-threatening.

Deadly overdoses are on the rise, too. From 1999 to 2017, the number of drug overdoses among Americans rose by around 316% from about 17 thousand to 70 thousand.

Drug overdoses are actually now the number one killers among Americans under the age of 55.

And the problem isn’t any better with alcohol either. In fact, as many as 6 people in the U.S. die every single day from alcohol poisoning.

Overdoses, then, have never been as deadly and as common as they are today. And that’s why it’s so important to know how to spot the signs of them and what to do when they happen.

Different drugs have different overdose symptoms. And knowing what they are can be key to treating them effectively.

Below are some of the most common symptoms of an overdose for the most widely-abused drugs today.

Prescription Opioids – These prescription drugs are used to treat pain. But while they can be incredibly helpful when taken properly, they can also be quite deadly when abused. Below are some of the most notable signs of an overdose.

  • Small, constricted “pinpoint pupils”
  • Falling asleep or loss of consciousness
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Limp body
  • Pale, blue, or cold skin

Cocaine – An intoxicating stimulant that can very easily lead to addiction, cocaine is also incredibly dangerous too. Some signs of an overdose could include:

  • Seizures
  • Loss of awareness of surroundings
  • Loss of urine control
  • High body temperature, severe sweating
  • High blood pressure, very fast heart rate or irregular heart rhythm
  • Bluish color of the skin
  • Fast or difficulty breathing
  • Death

Alcohol – While alcohol consumption is heavily ingrained into the day-to-day lives of many, it can also be quite dangerous too. Here are some of the signs of alcohol poisoning to watch out for:

  • Confusion
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
  • Irregular breathing (a gap of more than 10 seconds between breaths)
  • Blue-tinged skin or pale skin
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia)
  • Passing out (unconsciousness) and can't be awakened

Crystal Meth – One of the most powerful stimulants known today, crystal meth is a particularly dangerous drug. Some signs of a meth overdose include:

  • Agitation
  • Chest pain
  • Coma or unresponsiveness (in extreme cases)
  • Heart attack
  • Irregular or stopped heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Very high body temperature
  • Kidney damage and possibly kidney failure
  • Paranoia
  • Seizures
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Stroke

Benzodiazepines – These medications have a legitimate use in treating depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders. But they're also being abused more and more frequently. And that abuse can quickly lead to a life-threatening condition. An overdose on benzos may include symptoms like:

  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • Unresponsiveness
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Nystagmus (repetitive, uncontrolled eye movements)
  • Hallucinations
  • Slurred speech
  • Ataxia (lack of muscle coordination)
  • Coma
  • Hypotonia (overly relaxed muscles)
  • Weakness
  • Altered mental status, impairment of thinking
  • Poor memory
  • Shallow breathing
  • Low blood pressure

HeroinPotent, addictive, and deadly, heroin reigns supreme as one of the most notorious illicit drugs on the street today. The signs of a heroin overdose usually include:

AIRWAYS AND LUNGS

  • No breathing
  • Shallow breathing
  • Slow and difficult breathing

EYES, EARS, NOSE, AND THROAT

  • Dry mouth
  • Extremely small pupils, sometimes as small as the head of a pin (pinpoint pupils)
  • Discolored tongue

HEART AND BLOOD

  • Low blood pressure
  • Weak pulse

SKIN

  • Bluish-colored nails and lips

STOMACH AND INTESTINES

  • Constipation
  • Spasms of the stomach and intestines

NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • Coma
  • Delirium
  • Disorientation
  • Drowsiness
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements

When it comes to treating an overdose, the key to the very best outcome is speed. As soon as you notice the symptoms above, contact 9-1-1 immediately. The overwhelming majority of overdoses call for medical attention, and the operators here will be able to send an ambulance to your location.

The operator will also likely ask you a variety of questions to better understand the situation. And the better information they have, the more likely they’ll be to provide better treatment. Some of the questions they may ask could include:

  • What is the age, sex, height, and weight of the victim?
  • What’s their current condition?
  • What drug caused the overdose and when was it last used?
  • Does the victim have a history of substance abuse?
  • Do they have a prescription for the drug?

Be sure to answer each of these questions honestly and accurately. And remember that providing false information (such as the victim did not abuse an illicit drug when they really did) can have serious consequences.

If you do have to leave the side of the victim to call 911 and no one else is around, be sure to put them into the recovery position. This position can reduce the risk of deadly complications like choking and only takes a second to do.

The operator may also ask you to administer CPR or perform other actions like inducing vomiting. Try to follow their instructions as best as you can.

Finally, when the ambulance does arrive EMTs will be able to take over using special equipment and medications like naloxone to treat or even reverse the overdose. They’ll also likely transfer the victim to a hospital for more comprehensive care too.

Local Support Groups Near Wenatchee, Washington

Overcoming an addiction is no easy feat. And for many, willpower alone is not enough to push through the intense cravings and powerful triggers that usually accompany recovery. Relapse rates, after all, are around 40 to 60% for most addicts.

With the right kind of support system, though, substance abusers can boost those odds in their favor. And local support groups are some of the best places to find this invaluable support.

Thankfully, there are plenty of support groups in the Wenatchee area to choose from. Below are some of the best around.

The very first 12-step group and probably one of the most well-known, Alcoholics Anonymous was founded in 1935. And since then, it’s grown to have more than 2.1 million members all over the world.

Part of what makes AA so popular is that these groups are so accessible. Meetings are free, open to all, and built on the principle of anonymity.

They also use the 12-step model – an approach to recovery that has been scientifically proven to promote recovery.

There are quite a few Alcoholics Anonymous groups in the Wenatchee area to choose from too.

This was one of the very first offshoots of Alcoholics Anonymous. And similar to AA, Narcotics Anonymous uses the 12-step model to promote long-term sobriety and help members get vital healing in the recovery process.

But unlike Alcoholics Anonymous, NA is open to substance abusers of any kind. That means that people struggling with an addiction to heroin, crack, meth, or even alcohol itself are all welcome to attend.

Narcotics Anonymous meetings aren’t quite as widespread as AA, but there are still plenty of meetings nearby to consider.

While alcoholism can be enormously destructive to the person with the problem, it can also be incredibly damaging to the people around the addict as well. Friends, family members, and even coworkers can all suffer from serious functional problems because of their loved one’s drinking.

That’s where Al-Anon comes in. Al-Anon is another 12-step group devoted to helping these individuals in particular. And for many, it’s been an important part of getting them the help and support they need to stay happy and healthy.

There are just a few Al-Anon groups nearby to consider. Below are some of the closest.

For many young people affected by another person’s drinking, it can be hard to open up to others when they’re well over twice their age. And that means that they just might not get the support that they need.

Alateen is devoted specifically to helping these individuals by connecting them with other people their own age. Alateen groups usually have a specific age range their members are required to fall into. And that can make it much easier for them to tell others their experiences and accept the support that they need.

There aren’t many Alateen groups nearby but below are some of the closest.

Growing up in an alcoholic home can lead to serious trauma and functional problems. And for many, these traumas and problems can persist well into adulthood.

Adult Children of Alcoholics or ACoA is another 12-step group focused specifically on these individuals in particular. These meetings can be an integral part of overcoming past trauma and moving on towards a healthy, functional way of living.

There are a few ACoA meetings nearby to check out in the Wenatchee area.

While in-person groups are usually the best places to get support, there are more flexible options available.

Online groups, for instance, offer a valuable source of support 24 hours a day from nearly any location. All it takes is a smart device/computer and an internet connection to join.

Below are some great places to start.

Professional Treatment for The Best Recovery Outcomes

Finding the right support group can go a long way towards solidifying long-term recovery. And for many, it can provide the social support network that they need to stay sober and prevent a seriously dangerous relapse.

But even still, support alone is often not enough to keep recovering addicts from turning back to a substance of abuse. And in fact, the overwhelming majority of users will need a much higher level of care to give up their substance abuse habit for good.

That's where a professional addiction treatment program comes in. These programs are specifically designed to give patients the absolute best chance of long-term recovery. They use evidence-based strategies, treatments, and therapies to help recovering users adopt healthy new lifestyles and remain drug-free permanently.

A professional program is usually classified as either a detoxification program or a rehabilitation program. Some programs may contain both, too.

Detoxification is typically the first stage of a professional treatment program. Its main focus is on the serious mental and physical side effects of quitting an addictive substance – otherwise known as withdrawals. Withdrawals vary from substance to substance, but some of the most common include:

  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Tremors
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Irritability
  • Paranoia
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

For many, these withdrawals can be incredibly uncomfortable. And often times they can be so bad that most will resort back to using the addictive substance again just to get some relief.

A professional detoxification program aims to prevent these kinds of relapse. They may employ different types of therapies or medications to help make these symptoms more manageable or even shorten their duration.

A professional program also helps prevent and treat any serious complications that may arise. This is especially important for alcohol, benzodiazepines, or opioids as withdrawals from these drugs can be deadly.

Rehabilitation is the second phase. And without it, detoxification does little to nothing to support long-term sobriety on its own.

That’s because rehab concentrates on treating the serious mental changes that occur over the course of an addiction. Changes like compulsive drug use, unhealthy behavioral patterns, and poor reactions to stress are just some of the topics tackled in these programs.

There are three different types of rehab programs too.

  • InpatientAn inpatient program usually lasts for about 30 days. It requires patients to actually stay at the campus for the duration of the program – kind of like a recovery vacation. And while this approach offers a more controlled environment, it can also be disruptive to normal daily obligations like work, school, or even family matters.
  • Outpatient – Usually 3-month programs, an outpatient rehab lets recovering addicts spend their days and nights as they please. That’s because treatment sessions only take place several times a week in the evenings. However, a less intensive care plan can also lead to a higher risk of relapse, so it may not be right for everybody.
  • Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) – These programs follow the outpatient model but offer a higher level of care. Treatment sessions take place in the evenings still, but often last longer or occur more frequently throughout the week. They’re also usually around 3 months long.

There are a handful of professional treatment options within Wenatchee and the surrounding areas. And while they may offer a higher level of care than local support groups, that doesn’t mean that they’re the only options for professional care around.

In fact, resorting to only local options for care can severely limit your treatment choices and may even make your recovery less successful.

That’s why it’s important to consider travelling for you or your loved one's treatment. Doing so opens up the door to significantly more treatment options, a higher quality of care, and likely a better chance at long-term sobriety.

But beyond that, there are a couple of other benefits to travelling for treatment to be aware of.

  • It can help further solidify your commitment to your recovery.
  • It can cut down on the distractions of getting treatment in your own hometown.
  • It can make it harder to quit a program on a whim.
  • It can reduce the chances of running into someone you know.
  • It can give you more time for reflection on how your recovery is progressing.
