This transition is very difficult for some people. After a long period of drug use, a person may have a tough time fighting off cravings. So, it’s easy for people to relapse quickly after they get clean.
Rehab programs use therapy and counseling to help prepare people for life after addiction. In these programs, addicts spend time learning how to manage stress and avoid a relapse. Patients also participate in group support sessions that help them to realize they are not alone in their struggles.

Alcoholics Anonymous
Alcoholics Anonymous, sometimes referred to as “AA”, is a support group for alcohol addicts. This group uses a 12-step program to help its members overcome alcohol addiction.
There are a few specific components of AA. First, there are support meetings. The group holds free, daily meetings where members can go to get support when they need it. Members are allowed to attend as many or as few meetings as they’d like. Meetings are open to the public so that prospective members can stop by and check it out if they’re interested.
Then, there are the Twelve Steps. This is a system that each member works through in order to get sober. Through working the system, members learn how to confront their habit head-on. The Steps help people overcome their negative habits and move beyond it toward a happier, healthier lifestyle.
In a sense, AA paved the way for addiction support groups around the world. Since its inception, this organization has helped thousands upon thousands of people to get sober.

Narcotics Anonymous
Narcotics Anonymous, referred to as “NA” by its members, is an organization that helps drug addicts quit using. It uses a very similar model to AA. It holds free meetings where recovering addicts get together and connect around their shared experience.
In the meetings, members listen as each person shares their story. They talk about their lives. They discuss how addiction impacted them. They update each other on their recovery process and offer encouragement to new members. When you attend a meeting, you’ll find that some people have just recently joined while others have been going for decades.
There are no requirements for membership. The group’s members don’t care what drugs a person used or what types of mistakes they made. It’s a judgment-free organization and everyone is simply there to support one another.
If you’re struggling with a drug habit, this could be a great resource for you. No matter whether you’re addicted to hard drugs, prescription drugs, or even marijuana, the group will be happy to help you.

SMART Recovery
Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous have both helped a lot of people to overcome their drug habits. However, they don’t work for everyone. After all, there’s no magical elixir that cures addiction. Even the Twelve Steps aren’t a guarantee.
Some people are freaked out by the spiritual aspect of the Steps. Because the Third Step asks members to find a “higher power”, many people misjudge the program as a religious organization.
Luckily, there are plenty of alternatives. There are other organizations that offer help and support to addicts without relying on a 12-step model. SMART Recovery is one of those organizations.
In this program, members are able to meet with other recovering addicts, just as they would in AA or NA. However, this group avoids spiritual talk. Instead, it opts for a scientific/psychological approach to addiction recovery.
If you’ve tried AA and found that it didn’t work for you, this program might be more helpful. There are a number of meetings in the area every week.

Al-Anon
Al-Anon is a support group for the friends and family members of addicts. In these meetings, relatives get together to discuss how their loved one’s addiction has impacted their lives. For many people, this is a necessary form of support.
When you love an addict, their condition starts to take a toll on your own life. It causes stress, anxiety, anger, guilt, and depression. Sometimes, you may lose sleep or suffer financially. In the worst-case scenario, family members suffer physical abuse at the hands of the addict.
Al-Anon meetings give them a place where they can feel safe to open up about their emotions. These meetings are facilitated by a moderator who offers advice and helps however they can.
Members are invited to attend however often they want. Some people go because they want intervention tips. Others go because they’ve lost a loved one. Some family members attend just because they want to talk to someone. Whatever the case, this is a helpful resource for those who are suffering.
