What Types of Community Resources are Available for Alcoholism?

Recovering from an alcohol addiction can be difficult. The temptation to drink always seems to be looming. If you need support, you can find it right in your own neighborhood. An alcoholic often needs strong support to stay sober when they see beer, wine and other alcoholic beverages served all around them. Fortunately, there are many resources available for alcoholics to get the support they need.

Addiction Resources and Help for Families

Addiction doesn’t just impact one person. It hurts the entire family and their friends. For those who must live with an addict, they have to deal with the problems that arise from the condition every day. The person may become violent and angry or they may be withdrawn. Family members often make up excuses and cover for the person, hoping they will be able to overcome their addiction. The stress that addiction puts on relationships and the physical and mental health of the family cannot be ignored. In many cases, the family needs therapy or other help as much as the addict.

The family member may not know what they can do to help their loved one or have questions about dealing with an addiction. They might not know what to do or where to turn so they don’t feel so alone.

How to Deal with Overdose

How to Deal with Overdose

If you have a loved one who is an alcoholic or a drug addict, you may be worried about overdose. It can happen easier than you think and you may not have much time to deal with the situation. It’s helpful to know where to turn ahead of time or who to call when you need medical help for your loved one is overdosing on a substance.

How to Deal with Overdose

While no one likes to think about it, death from alcohol withdrawal is a possibility. This is usually referred to as Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome, or AWS. If you develop AWS, that means you have started to show DT symptoms.

DT stands for delirium tremens, and it’s a condition that can result from a long period of drinking. DTs can become fatal if you don’t receive immediate medical care. It’s important to know what the signs are and take them seriously.

Delirium tremens is a condition that is characterized by extreme confusion during alcohol withdrawal. It usually begins within three days of your last drink, although it has been known to start later. You can tell that you have developed this condition if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • Excessive sweating
  • An irregular heart rate
  • Shivering
  • Feeling shaky
  • Seizures
  • Hallucinations or delusions

Some people will develop an abnormally high body temperature. Fever as well as seizures can result in death. You could be at risk for developing DTs if you have been drinking excessively for a long time. You’re also more likely to experience them if you have gone through withdrawal before.

The fact is anyone can be at risk for DTs. This is why it’s important for you to recover in a medical setting. You can be monitored closely for complications. If it does occur, you’ll be able to get emergency help right away. The good news is that by treating the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal right promptly, your risk of death and other medical emergencies decreases.

If someone is overdosing on alcohol or any other drug and can’t respond, you need to get medical help right away. The best thing to do is call 911. They will arrive on the scene within minutes and begin treatment. Many medical personnel carry naloxone which can stop the overdose symptoms of heroin. They also know what to do for an overdose of prescription medications or a combination of addictive substances.

It would be helpful if you can give information to the first responders about what the person has taken and when. If you don’t know, you can look around for any evidence of what they might have been taking at the time of the overdose.

You can take the person to a local hospital or clinic if you suspect an overdose or an adverse reaction to a drug or combination of drugs. The person may show some signs of overdose or side effects which may be serious. You don’t want to ignore these indications because they could lead to seizures and other health conditions, even a coma or death.
