While many people believe that Narcotics Anonymous is simply the “drug” version of AA, the truth is that the organization does not make the distinction between illicit drugs and alcohol. Newcastle, WA SMART Recovery Meetings
Whereas 12-step programs rely on a form of spirituality in order to recover (surrendering your will to a higher power, etc.), SMART Recovery programs take a different approach to treating addiction.
These 4-point programs focus on self-empowerment and self-reliance by teaching members the tools and techniques needed for self-directed change. Instead of admitting powerlessness, then, SMART Recovery programs aim to educate addicts on how to cope with cravings, deal with emotional upsets, and foster a clearer awareness of the individual emotions and thoughts behind our actions.
What’s more, these programs and the techniques taught during them are usually backed up by scientific evidence and continue to evolve as more research becomes available.

Meetings for Family Members of Addicts
As anyone who has dealt with an addicted family member can tell you, addiction doesn’t just impact the individual with the substance use disorder. Instead, this disease can cripple familial relationships, sabotage lifelong friendships, and can (and often does) tear partners apart.
Thankfully, though, there is are several support groups called Al-Anon and Alateen which are dedicated specifically to helping family members cope with and seek help for an addicted loved one.
Built off of the same core tenets of 12-step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, Al-Anon is dedicated to building a support network for individuals struggling with the problems caused by a family member’s addictions. They provide advice, personal experiences, and a sense of community that can be invaluable in dealing with an addicted loved one.
Specifically, this group can be particularly helpful when it comes to recognizing the signs of and putting a stop to codependent behaviors that are not only toxic but are also typically enabling the addicted party to keep on using and abusing drugs.
