Alcoholics Anonymous
AA is an organization that helps alcohol addicts get sober. This group holds free meetings where alcoholics convene to talk about their condition.
Everyone is welcome in these meetings. They accept newly sober people, people who’ve been sober for decades, and even people who aren’t sober but are trying to get there. The group’s only requirement is that members want to live an alcohol-free lifestyle. As long as you want to stay sober, you are welcome in AA.
The organization uses a system called “The Twelve Steps”. This system teaches people how to accept their mistakes and move forward toward a happier, healthier life. It also teaches people how to stop focusing on themselves and turn their attention toward the world around them. AA preaches compassion, forgiveness, and selflessness.

Narcotics Anonymous
Narcotics Anonymous, or “NA”, is a group that uses the same 12-step model as AA. However, this group is designed for drug addicts instead of alcoholics.
The group does not discriminate against any particular drugs. They accept heroin addicts, cocaine addicts, and everyone else who has a substance abuse problem. Much like AA, they welcome everyone who has the desire to overcome an addiction.

One of the most popular alternatives to AA and NA is called SMART Recovery. This program takes a scientific approach to the recovery process. Instead of tackling addiction in a semi-religious, spiritual way as the Anonymous programs do, this organization uses more practical, action-based tactics.
AA and NA are both very helpful. Many people benefit from their programs. But, they don’t work for everyone. So, if you’re looking for an alternative to the Twelve Steps, this might be a better option for you.

Al-Anon
Al-Anon is a support group that’s similar to Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. However, this group isn’t designed for addicts themselves. Instead, this organization caters to the family members and friends of addicts.
Oftentimes, an addict’s relatives suffer just as bad as they do. After all, it’s very painful to love an addict. It generates anxiety, depression, anger, and a range of other negative feelings.
Al-Anon holds meetings where family members and friends go to discuss these feelings. They offer each other support and help each other cope. As a group, everyone helps each other to recognize that their loved one’s addiction is not their own.
Even if you love an addict, it’s important to recognize that their condition is out of your control. Al-Anon can help you to come to terms with this fact. If someone else’s addiction is having negative effects in your life, this group could be a good resource for you.

Alateen
Alateen is essentially Al-Anon for kids. This is a group for the young family members (children, etc) of addicts. The organization holds meetings where kids get together to learn about addiction and talk about how it has affected their lives.
Sometimes, it’s very tough to talk to kids about a parent’s addiction. Not every adult knows how to approach this conversation. Alateen meetings are facilitated by an adult who specializes in these discussions.
It’s helpful for children to realize that they aren’t alone. Other kids share this problem, too. Alateen helps to connect these kids so that they can talk with others who share the same painful experience.
